WCA Quarterly Newsletter – Q1 2025
Dear WCA Community,
The first quarter of 2025 has been one of action, collaboration, and renewed hope. From exciting wildlife sightings to educational outreach and the return of a vital marine buoy, our programs continue to grow thanks to the power of community and the commitment of our partners, staff, and volunteers.
Here’s a look at what we’ve accomplished together so far this year:
Water Quality Program
This quarter saw major strides in our commitment to nature-based solutions.
In February, we installed a bio-garden at Tierramor, in collaboration with Ridge to Reefs, the University of Costa Rica’s School of Biosystems Engineering, and Suwo Constructora. This innovative system supports wastewater treatment using ecological design.
In March, we shared exciting results from the bio-garden at Santa Marta School—the system passed all standards, proving its effectiveness! It now benefits over 200 students and staff by providing cleaner water and a model of sustainability for other schools.
Interested in bringing bio-gardens or similar solutions to your property or business? Let’s talk!
Biodiversity Program
The forests and rivers surrounding the Ostional Refuge continue to reveal their hidden wonders.
From sightings of elusive jaguarundis in the highlands to white-tailed deer near the Nosara River, February reminded us of the stunning biodiversity in our region.
In March, we continued identifying individual ocelots, including a particularly striking one captured just 1.8 km from a previous sighting—evidence of healthy wildlife movement.
Our network of trail cameras continues to grow. If you’d like to sponsor or host a camera station, we now offer a simple way for you to get involved in local biodiversity monitoring.

Marine Life Program
After months of repair and anticipation, we’re thrilled to announce:
The marine buoy is back!
Damaged by vandalism, the buoy underwent repairs in early 2025.
In collaboration with Nosara’s firefighters, we reinstalled it near Playa Pelada—a key step for ocean data collection and marine conservation.
Education Program
In March, WCA founder Dr. Vanessa Bézy led a session with NOCA, where 16 students explored sustainability practices for a park project along the Nosara River. The session blended science, creativity, and community planning, inspiring a new generation of conservation leaders.
Community & Team Updates
In April, we welcomed Elena, our new Program Coordinator. With a strong background in regenerative agriculture, environmental education, and community-led conservation, Elena is already making waves in our efforts to connect science with grassroots action.
We’re so happy to have her on board!
Volunteer & Donor Appreciation
We wrapped up the quarter with a heartfelt celebration on April 12th, honoring the incredible individuals who fuel our mission. Thank you to Casa Milo for hosting us, and to every volunteer, donor, and supporter—your dedication keeps our work alive.
Looking Ahead
As we head into the next quarter, we remain focused on resilience, regeneration, and community participation. There’s so much more ahead—and we’re grateful to have you with us on this journey.
With appreciation,The WCA Team
