WCA Quarterly Newsletter (July 2025)

WCA Quarterly Newsletter – Q2 2025

The second quarter of 2025 has been a season of milestones, collaboration, and gratitude. From the long-awaited return of our marine buoy to a full year of biodiversity monitoring, and from bio-garden successes to celebrations with our incredible supporters, these past months remind us what’s possible when science and community come together.

Here’s a look at what we’ve accomplished together:

Marine Life Program

The Buoy is Back! After months of repair and anticipation, our marine buoy was reinstalled in April at Playa Pelada, in collaboration with Bomberos de Nosara and Pelada fishermen.

This is just the second buoy of its kind on the eastern Pacific coast of Central America—delivering real-time data on sea temperature, wind speed, and wave dynamics. It’s a major step for marine science and for protecting ecosystems like coral reefs.

We also joined the global Sea Turtle Week in June, honoring these ancient mariners and reminding the community to report sightings of nesting, hatching, or distressed turtles. Together, we can safeguard our coast.

Biodiversity Program

Wildlife in Motion: Our trail camera network continues to reveal the hidden life of the Ostional Refuge. From jaguarundis to ocelots, these images provide insight into species movement as seasons shift.

This June, we concluded a full year of camera trap monitoring made possible by support from Los Altos Rotary Club and San Pedro-Curridabat Rotary Club. Their commitment helped us document extraordinary wildlife activity and strengthen conservation strategies. A heartfelt thank-you to both clubs for making this possible!

Water Quality Program

One Year of Bio-Gardens—and a Stronger Community

This quarter marked the completion of the first year of our bio-garden project—nature-based systems that support wastewater treatment at schools and community sites. The results are inspiring: cleaner water, healthier ecosystems, and a new model for sustainable solutions in Nosara.

We’re deeply grateful to Grand Challenges Canada for their support in bringing this vision to life. Results will be shared during a community meeting next month—stay tuned!

With the arrival of the rainy season, we also continue to monitor the “first flush effect”, when runoff affects local water quality. Weekly results are shared every Thursday on our social media—helping everyone stay informed and safe.

Looking Ahead

As we step into the second half of the year, we remain focused on resilience, regeneration, and community action. With your continued support, we’re building a stronger, more sustainable future for Nosara’s people, wildlife, and ecosystems.

With appreciation,The WCA Team
